Royal Oak

In 1972, Audemars Piguet launched the very first Royal Oak – Reference 5402 – designed by Gerald Genta: a move that can be credited to Georges Golay, Managing Director of Audemars Piguet at the time.

It broke every single
aesthetic code imaginable.

Its steel case, octagonal bezel, “Tapisserie” dial, and integrated bracelet changed the trajectory of luxury watchmaking – forever.

Launched amidst the Quartz crisis, it was the same price as a gold watch, and created a whole new product category: the luxury steel sports watch.
